Gamay, ‘La Plage’, Jean Maupertuis, 2024
Country: France
Region: Auvergne (a rising star of the Loire, so far down the valley it’s basically in the Rhone)
Grape: Gamay
Style: Juicy but structured, full of life
ABV: 12%
Wine Notes: I adore this style of wine. If you’ve not had Auvergne Gamay before it’s akin to Morton/Moulin-a-vent but with some volcanic, Rhone-ness to it. Must try.
Farming Notes: 30 Year Old Vines. Zero chemicals in the vineyards. Strong focus on microflora in soil health and vine rows are worked only on a bi-annual basis so grass gets a couple of years to grow free and reduce vigour in the vines, adding to concentration in final wines. Unfined/unfiltered.
’La Plage’ - The Beach, refers to the vineyards sandy soils.
Producer Notes: Jean Maupertuis is an ex I.T worker who quit his job to pursue a dream in the vines.
